ANGEL AND THE BADMAN
This was John Wayne's first independently-produced film made
in 1946 after the War. Perhaps reflecting the nation's fatigue at fighting and killing,
this film takes a pacifist tone as gun-slinger Wayne is nursed back to health following a
gun-fight by a Quaker girl and her family who try and show him that violence is not the
only way of life. An excellent action filled story with greater character development than
most standard westerns of the time. Also in the cast is Gail Russell, Harry Carey Sr.,
Bruce Cabot, Irene Rich and Lee Dixon.

BLOOD ON THE SUN starring James Cagney In his first film in two years, James Cagney stars as Nick Condon, the American editor of a pre-WW2 Tokyo newspaper. When two of his best friends are horribly murdered, Condon suspects that the "peaceful" Japanese military government is up to no good. He dedicates himself to getting his hands on the "Tanka Plan," a Japanese blueprint for conquering the world, and bringing this document to the attention of the Free World. As a result, he is targeted for persecution by the corrupt Tokyo police and betrayed by a traitorous fellow journalist. On a pleasanter note, Condon makes the acquaintance of half-Chinese Iris Hilliard, played by Sylvia Sidney, who agrees to help him foil the Japanese High Command. As was customary in wartime films, virtually all the Japanese characters in "Blood on the Sun" are played by Chinese, Korean, and Caucasian actors; for example, Robert Armstrong is cast as Colonel Tojo, while Premiere Tenaka is enacted by John Emery. DECAMERON NIGHTS A beautiful Technicolor version of three of Boccaccio's tales of marriage and infidelity in medieval Europe. This film marked the first appearance of Joan Collins who was in her teens when she made this film. The film stars Joan Fontane and Louis Jordan in the romantic trilogy adapted from the ancient dinner stories. Blended with good humor and sensuality, this first rate cast produces a thoroughly delightful movie. Director Hugo Fregonese and writer George Oppenheimer do the unthinkable: they manage to transform Giovanni Boccaccio's bawdy -- and downright raunchy -- medieval tales of martial discontent and infidelity into harmless white-bread treacle. Louis Jourdan plays Boccaccio in a framing story set in a villa in the Florentine hills. With a widowed woman and her sex-starved female wards hungrily hunched over listening to his every word, Boccaccio spins three tales of illicit romance involving a trio of medieval husbands and wives. All three tales feature Jourdan as the romantic male lead and Joan Fontane- spruced up in a collection of bright costumes -- as the misunderstood and mistreated women of the tales. The first story concerns the bored housewife, of a middle-aged husband, who willingly jumps into the arms of a roustabout. The second tale tells the story of a husband who is highly suspicious of his wife's fidelity and the wife's circumspect way of proving her virtue to her husband. The third story is an ineffectual lark about a wife who fools her indifferent husband into demonstrating his proper marital role. Boccaccio had to wait for Pier Pasolini in order to get the spirit of his Decameron right. IMMORTAL BATTALION
This Hollywood import from Great Britain was directed by
Carol Reed and stars David Niven, Stanley Holloway and Peter Ustinov. This film follows
the metamorphosis of a cross-section group of British citizens from a bunch of squabbling
individuals into a top fighting group of citizen soldiers. Under the command of David
Niven, they make their contribution in the final phase of the African campaign against
Rommel. For some great newsreels & documentaries, see the Early Americana section
of this web site for a great variety.
"The Immortal Battalion" has a bit of a convoluted history. It started
life as a training film,"The New LOT", which ran 44 minutes. When Winston
Churchill approached David Niven about creating a film that would do for the
British Army what "In Which We Serve" had done for the Royal Navy, he contacted
Carol Reed and suggested expanding "The New Lot". The result, written by Eric
Ambler and Peter Ustinov, was the acclaimed "The Way Ahead". For its U.S.
release, "Way Ahead" was edited to a shorter length and retitled
"The Immortal Battalion".
In either of its feature length forms, the film is concerned with the
training of a bunch of raw recruits into a capable and efficient fighting
regiment. Niven stars as Jim Perry, a lieutenant and former ordinary guy who
finds that he must learn to take a tough line in order to make his wildly
diverse crew come together and understand the importance both of the war and of
their place in it. Although it takes time and constant effort on the part of
Perry and his sergeant, the eight men eventually overcome their different
backgrounds and feelings, and transform themselves into a unit which performs
its tasks with admirable skill and dexterity, preparing them for their battle
against the Desert Fox in Africa. Told in a semi-documentary style, Battalion
also features the screen debut of Trevor Howard. Part of this synopsis provided

Movies About Movies Vol. 2
This collection of films is from the silent era. In "CRAZY TO ACT", Oliver Hardy plays a rich movie producer who
finances an old fashioned mellodrama for his girl friend Mildred June. An incompetent film
director and crew cause him to lose both the film and the girl. Mack Sennett's back-lot
and cyclorama are very much a part of the action and atmsophere of the old silent era
studios. In "A GIRL'S
FOLLY", starring
Robert Warwick, June Elvidge, Doris Kenyon and Johnny Hines we get a look at another
silent movie studio with the back-lot, cameras, film editors, projection rooms and the
extras in their varied costumes. This film was directed by Maurice Tourner. Back again at
the Sennett Studios, we get a classic look at movie-going at the old time
Nickelodeans and celebrity-worship in "A
MOVIE STAR". This
is a tour-de-force for veteran comic Mack Swain who plays a bloated cowboy star who shows
up at a local theater to admire his own acting and take in all the attention of the
ladies.

GIRL starring Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. made his talkie debut in the low-budget but imaginative "exploitationer" called "PARTY GIRL". Doug Jr. plays carefree young bachelor Jay Roundtree, the son of a wealthy industrialist. Though Jay is in love with his dad's secretary, his class consciousness compels him to keep his distance from her. One night, he joins his fraternity pals for a wild penthouse bash, where a group of "party girls" (a 1930 code word for prostitutes) encourage the guests (mostly "dirty old men" in tuxedoes) to wash their inhibitions away with bootleg liquor. Imagine Jay's surprise when, in the course of the evening, he discovers that his office sweetheart was once a party girl herself -- though that's nothing compared to what he discovers about his own father! Though economically produced, "PARTY GIRL" contains some astounding visual effects, including a hydraulic "car lift" which transports the revelers to their secret rendezvous and a remarkably convincing suicidal plunge from a skyscraper. PERILS OF PAULINE This is not the silent serial listed elsewhere but a 1940's bio-pic starring Betty Hutton as Pearl White. Loosely based on the actress, this light adventure musical captures the early days of movie-making with an affectionate feel for the pioneering days of films. John Lund and a host of silent era greats join in on the fun when entertainment was simpler and more basic. Pearl White's character is introduced as a frustrated factory worker who aspires to become a dramatic actress. She joins a touring theatrical troupe managed by handsome but pompous Mike, played by John Lund. Fame and fortune elude her because she's unable to suppress her natural rambunctiousness. In desperation, Pearl takes a job at a movie studio, where she promptly finds herself in the middle of a slapstick pie fight. With the help of bombastic director Mac, pplayed by William Demerest, top-hatted villain portrayer Timmy (Billy De Wolfe), and imperious dramatics coach Julia (Constance Collier), Pearl soon becomes world-famous as the star of such cliffhanging, tied-to-the-railroad-tracks serials. At the height of her fame, she arranges for her theatrical mentor Mike to get a job as her leading man, forcing him to swallow his pride and admit that he's been in love with her from the moment he met her. A series of clichéd complications contrive to separate Pearl and Mike, but he returns to her arms when she's seriously injured during a Parisian stage performance. A few fairly credible recreations of silent moviemaking techniques are staged. As a musical comedy, however, the film passes muster, especially during the performance of such Frank Loesser tunes as "I Wish I Didn't Love You So" and "The Sewing Machine." As a bonus, the film rounds up several silent-movie veterans in cameo roles, including William Farnum, Chester Conklin, Jimmy Finlayson, Creighton Hale, Hank Mann and Paul Panzer, who played the sneering villain in the original 1914 "Perils of Pauline". PRIVATE LIFE OF DON JUAN
starring Douglas Fairbanks, Sr.
Producer and director Alexander Korda followed up "Private Life of Henry the
Eighth"(one of the first internationally successful British films) with this
historical comedy. After years in exile, the great lover Don Juan returns to
Seville, the city of his salad days. However, Don Juan is now married and
middle-aged, and his days as a spoiler of women seem to be behind him. When he
learns that a young man in town, played by Barry McKay, has been posing as him
and making time with the local ladies, Don decides to prove who the great lover
truly is and attempts the seduction of Antonia, played by Merle Oberson, a
beautiful dancer. However, Don's doctor informs him that girl-hunting will tax
his fragile health, and his wife Dolores will no longer turn a blind eye to his
infidelity. When the impostor is killed by a jealous husband, Don is relieved,
as his "death" allows him to retire from his career as a rake with his
reputation intact. But when the old itch returns, Don makes the sad discovery
that if he can't convince women he's Don Juan, they simply aren't interested in
him. "Private Life of Don Juan" provided one of the few talking era roles
for silent screen swashbuckler, and proved to be his last picture. He retired
and passed away in 1939.

SHE GOES
TO WAR 1929
Eleanor Boardman, Alma Rubens, Al “Fuzzy” St. John. Director Henry King’s first
sound film. A chilling anti-war effort, starting with a written appeal to the
audience.. A rich girl working in a canteen dresses as a man sees the horrors
of the front line during WW1. Trench warfare, death, men driven to insanity and
childlike behavior, tanks inching through fields of fire as the occupants get
baked inside, and ultimate murder to survive confront our heroine. Part

S.O.S. Coastguard
1937 complete serial starring Ralph ("Dick Tracy") Byrd and Bela ("Dracula") Lugosi In his third of four action serials, horror star Bela Lugosi played Boroff, an internationally notorious fiend who's attempting to pawn off his deadly invention, a disintegrating gas, to the highest bidder. Before the gas can be manufactured, however, Boroff must go in search of certain hard to come by ingredients and the villain is thwarted at every step by US coastguard agent Terry Kent played by Ralph Byrd and crusading newspaper woman Jean Norman played by Maxine Doyle. In the serial's 12th and final chapter, "The Deadly Circle," Boroff is finally destroyed by his own invention, civilization thus saved for Democracy. Down on his luck by 1937, Lugosi could only watch as Republic Pictures' screenwriters wickedly named his character "Boroff," an obvious reference to Lugosi-rival Boris Karloff. "S.O.S. Coastguard" nevertheless emerged as one of the Hungarian star's better vehicles, in no small measure due to its vigorous hero, Ralph Byrd, a handsome actor perhaps better remembered from Republic's Dick Tracy serials. VENGEANCE VALLEY Burt Lancaster stars as the adopted older brother of Robert Walker. A rivalry begins between the two brothers when a girl bearing a child out of wedlock arrives in town. She is dedicated to killing the father of her child. The story builds to a climax during the annual cattle drive. The old "Cain and Abel" plot device is redefined within Western terms in MGM's "Vengeance Valley". Burt Lancaster stars as ranch-hand Owen Daybright, who has been raised as a son by rancher Arch Stroble, played by Ray Collins of Mercury Theater and Perry Mason fame. Stroble's natural son Lee played by Robert Walker, has always been envious of Owen, who in turn has spent most of his life pulling Lee out of trouble and keeping the boy's misdeeds a secret from the elder Stroble. When Lee fathers an illegitimate child, he tries to shift the responsibility on Owen, leading to a life-threatening confrontation with the vengeance-seeking brothers of the baby's mother. There's plenty more plot twists before virtue finally triumphs. Joanne Dru co-stars as Lee's long-suffering wife Jen, who harbors a secret yen for Owen. | WIVES
UNDER SUSPICION (1937) directed by James Whale Warren William stars in this story about a district attorney who is menaced by the brother of a recently executed prisoner while becoming convinced that his wife is having an affair. This is a remake of Whale's own 1933 production "A Kiss Before the Mirror" with a few noticeable concessions for the more stringent censors of 1938. District attorney Jim Stowell (Warren William) is convinced that every murder should be sentenced to the electric chair, regardless of motive or circumstances. He remains steadfast in this belief as he prosecutes an elderly professor (Ralph Morgan) for murdering his wife in a fit of jealous rage. But while relaxing at home one evening in the company of his lovely but somewhat neglected young wife Lucy (Gail Patrick), Stowell's own jealousy is aroused by Lucy's response to the innocent attentions of young family friend Phil (William Lundigan). As the days pass, Stowell cannot suppress his own urge to kill his wife and her supposed lover. An eleventh-hour plot twist prevents him from making the same mistake as the old professor-and also gives him a new perspective on the quality of mercy. Information provided by Hal Erickson. GLORIA JEAN
|
| Gloria Jean's
winsome personality and knockout singing voice made her one of the most
charming and talented performers of all time. She has had a life filled with
peaks and valleys. Happily, one of those peaks is GLORIA JEAN: A LITTLE BIT
OF HEAVEN, a new book that combines Gloria's personal memories with the
input of her biographers, Scott and Jan MacGillivray. Their combined efforts
have produced one of the finest, most comprehensive books ever written about
a show business figure. This volume is an engaging blend of biography, autobiography, show biz history, and film analysis. Gloria Jean's comments regarding her life and career (in movies, television, radio, concerts and live theater) are consistently fascinating; she possesses a real gift for storytelling, and brings a vibrant, you-are-there immediacy to each anecdote. (Additionally, Bonnie Schoonover, Gloria's younger sister, provides some of her own keen observations.) Gloria doesn't look back with bitterness; if some individuals come across in an unflattering light (and some do), it's simply a matter of documenting how that person's unfortunate behavior had an impact on Gloria's career. On the other hand, Gloria is quick to praise those who deserve it...and that includes familiar names such as Bing Crosby, Groucho Marx, and W. C. Fields. Gloria's insight as a show business veteran is neatly complemented by the writing/research skills of her biographers. The MacGillivrays combine an obvious (and infectious) affection for their subject with their exhaustive knowledge of the entertainment industry in general and Gloria Jean in particular. Readers will be amazed by the wealth of never-before-published material on each one of Gloria's movies...including production histories, summaries, critiques, reviews, theatrical and home-movie reissues, aborted projects, and lost films. The result is a meticulously detailed, well-organized and highly enlightening volume brimming with information that will surprise even the most seasoned film buff. (Has anyone ever detailed the production histories of WONDER VALLEY and LAFFING TIME prior to this?) The book contains an equally impressive gallery of rare photographs: charming candid shots of Gloria with W. C. Fields, Donald O'Connor, and Elizabeth Taylor; Gloria posing with Boris Karloff and makeup master Jack Pierce; Gloria feeding birthday cake to Sabu; and even frame enlargements from screen tests and obscure films. (One of my favorite photos is a wildly incongruous shot of little Gloria posing with the giant robot from the Bela Lugosi serial THE PHANTOM CREEPS.) The only disappointing aspect about this enterprise has nothing to do with the book itself. After reading about the movies, I was dismayed to learn that the majority of Gloria's films never made it to video, nor do they turn up on television anymore. Sure, NEVER GIVE A SUCKER AN EVEN BREAK (starring W. C. Fields), her best known movie, rates an occasional TV broadcast, and COPACABANA (starring Groucho Marx and Carmen Miranda) is currently available on DVD, but THE UNDER-PUP, DESTINY, A LITTLE BIT OF HEAVEN, RIVER GANG, I'LL REMEMBER APRIL, I SURRENDER DEAR and the rest are missing-in-action, languishing in the film vaults. Her work deserves to be made widely accessible. A handsome, smartly produced volume, GLORIA JEAN: A LITTLE BIT OF HEAVEN is a winner all the way. At last, Gloria's story has been documented in a manner worthy of her, and even if you're not already a fan, you'll find this book is much more than just "a little bit" of Heaven. |

In my own time, governments have taken the place
of people. They have also taken the place of God. Governments speak for the
people, dream for them and determine, absurdly, their lives and deaths.
It is a worship I lack. I have no reverence for the all-powerful and bewildering
face of Government. I see it as a lessening of the human being, and a final
looting of his birthright-the survival of his young. I see it as an ogre with
despair in its eyes. - Ben Hecht in "PERFIDY"
